How to know when to give up? Is it OK to give up?
Is giving up a valid option? How does it look like? Does it make sense to fight a battle which is already lost? Is there any sense to continue when everything allways falls apart? What to do when all energy is exhausted, when all hope has melted away, when there's no more strenght, motivation, no more Will..... What is giving up? What do you actually do when you give up? |

Well, my personal opinion is that giving up can be more honourable, if you like, than continuing on when there is no hope of willing merely serves to have more of your arguments demolished.
I take it you were referring to debates on these forums? |

As Bobby Jones once said to a frustrated amateur golfer, "take two weeks off and then quit".
I've taken that advice about golf-mostly. I've never put so much time, effort, thinking, and money into a hobby and gotten so little out of the damn thing. So I only play when I absolutely have to. Fuck it. When you quit something you simply just don't do it anymore. You seperate yourself from whatever it is you were participating in. It's very simple. |

I had to give up recently - A side programming project that I'd been working on for two+ years. Damn thing was supposed to be done in three to siz months. Lack of communication, lack of time on my part, too high expectations on my client's part and many other factors contributed to the futility of the project.
Pisses me off because I've spent a lot of time on it. I missed time with my family. I missed time to myself doing things *I* wanted to do. Every time I thought I was a month away from completion something else would change. Finaly, I just decided "to hell with it" and ended the project. Made the client sign a "termination contract" so that he could not come after me for any of his time lost and could not use any of my work. (Hint: If there is money involved in whatever it is you're giving up, make sure to cover your ass). Even though it depresses me to think about the time lost, but now I'm happier because I'm free. Free to do the things I need to do. Free to spend time with my family. So, when do you give up? Well, that depends on what you're giving up, and what you're giving it up for. You have to weigh the options carefully. Make your decision and then move forward. Dirty Dog |

I gave up trying to find evidence for God and the afterlife quite a while ago. I also gave up trying to induce a mystical vision of God and the afterlife. When I gave up these, I decided to rest upon faith alone.

I imagine you can find truth in movement and in rest.
