Hey I am always hearing these songs on car commercials and during the Real World that I like, but I can never catch the name of them. I am interested in getting into trip hop and the like but I don't know where to start. Can anybody help me out?
I like that song "Breathe" on the Mitsubishi commercial, and I also like that song on that Graduate-like car commercial with that guy stopping the wedding. What with the booming bass and the Gregorian-sounding chants and whatnot? (Anybody know the name of that song?) I grew up breaking to the old Din Da Da and Tour De France songs, and I am nolstalgic to get that old feeling back. Plus, I'm flat out sick of what passes currently for hip-hop. So I'm looking to expand my horizons here. Be gentle. I'm looking for download reccomendations to help get me started in this new and strange world. Help. |

The only car commercial song I can think of off the top of my head is by Mr. Scruff. Its got some jazz hooks and I know you'll recognize it when you hear it. Sorry that I can't remember the title...

If you remember what company the commercial was from, you might be able to find it on Music From TV Commercials.

Trip-hop -- You can't go wrong with Portishead
Acid Jazz -- try some of Amon Tobin's earlier stuff from his CDs "Bricolage" and "Permutation." |

I've been told that Hotel Costes is trip-hop (I have no idea, it didn't sound like I thought it would, but I like them anyway)
I think they did a Lincoln commercial - gotta to look at that link posted above to see ![]() -k |

Some Amazon links to good trip-hop/acid jazz (they usually have sound clips, and if you buy using these links infidels gets some money too):

The Rebirth of Cool is a great series of mixed artists music, and is a great place to start. I have 7 volumes, and they are excellent. (I don't know if there have been anymore than 7?)
Also, check out an album by Archive called "Londonium" - that's pretty nice. And for earlier stuff, there is the James Taylor Quartet (no, no relation to "Sweet Baby James" Taylor), G-Love and Special Sauce, Guru, ....ummmm, shit, I can't remember any more names right now... ![]() |
