Go pills' routine for U.S. pilots: Evidently these drugs have been used freely in wars ranging from the Gulf, Bosnia, Afghanistan and right up until the recent conflict in Iraq...the speed is supplied to pilots to render them more alert and aggressive. Although, relatively recent guidelines mean the drugs are supposed to be given in "small, controlled doses", US military personnel have claimed in some circumstances the drugs have been available by the handful. Fighter pilots on speed? If, as the US military claims, these mind-altering drugs are "safe and useful" how come they aren't used for commercial pilots and truck drivers? A commercial pilot on Dexedrine would face instant dismissal and truck drivers who pop pills are demonised and prosecuted. The heavy machinery operated by soldiers is considerably more lethal. Yet Dexedrine is encouraged in war[as well as "downers" to afford sleep]. The drug effects people differently, with some soldiers complaining of "jitteriness and increased feelings of paranoia". Great...a jittery and paranoid fighter pilot. Does this sound sensible...? It's also been revealed that vital information on 'friendly fire' incidents has been withheld by the US military. Why...? I'm think that the war on drugs may be a typo. It was meant to be the war with drugs and got horribly out of control with the wrong preposition.

Even less sensible is a jittery and paranoid Commander In Chief. Come to think of it, Bush did look hopped up the day he stepped out onto the aircraft carrier to have his photo taken.

What's really silly is that there is no more need for go-pills in the military. Provigil (an anti-narcolepsy drug) works better (it actually removes the sleepiness, not merely keep you awake) and doesn't have the side effects.
