Default It's about CPU's, this server and stuff

Wouldn't it be a good thing to turn the "Now browsing this forum..."-function off to the limit CPU-usage? It's not that usefull and it might just save enough CPU-power to keep the board accesible at all times.

PS: I always have troubles finding a good subjectline, please do forgive me

I doubt that uses more than a drop in the bucket.

It's been discussed, and Loren's right; turning that off wouldn't affect a thing. It's the big search function that's the real demon.

After all, the information about who is logged in is probably already in memory. If the bottleneck is the disk, things not on disk contribute nothing to the problem.

Exactly. The particular throughput problem we are experiencing is disk bottleneck, so anything that can be cached in memory won't affect a thing, so far as improving matters goes. Search is the big bugaboo because it accesses lots of disk records that haven't been touched in aeons and thus aren't in the cache.
