This is one of the most common phrases that I hear being bandied around often but never really understood the rationale for it. So what's wrong appointing onself as judge, jury and executioer.

Well, if any one person had that much power, it could very easily be abused. Without others to keep that power in check, anyone viewed as infallible is basically beyond reproach, or so it is thought, and their commands would be followed unquestioningly, which could very well be dangerous.
