The more active atheists out there, the better. OTOH, I completely understand that the others fall into at least two categories, which I find completely acceptable: 1) can't or won't be active because of social or familial repurcussions, or 2) don't really care what other people believe.

(Laurie) Honestly, it's up to the individual. There are lots of reasons for atheists to stay quiet about their non-belief, the same way there are lots of reasons for homosexuals to stay quiet about their identity. I spent at least four years on these boards while being non-activist about my atheism "in real life." (Unless I was directly asked. Then I was happy to talk about it.) It's pretty easy to write a check to skepticism-promoting organizations, though. I'm deliberately expanding my "activism" in that area.

I definitely don't hide my atheism from my family or anyone else, but the most pro-active I've been lately was the other day, when responding to a telephone poll. The guy asked, "religious preference?" "Atheist" was the firm and quick reply. Boy that felt good.
