As someone who has had to do their fair share of tracing IPs, I can tell you that only MSN and AOL have IPs that could be "shared" - let's look at this mathematically. AOL IPs are made up of four sets of digits: XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX. The first set is usually a 172 or a 174. The rest of the IP (nine digits) can be ANYTHING - 0 through 9. Consider the fact that everything is generated randomly, and you'll see how impossible it is that the same person could have the same AOL IP consistantly. Doesn't make much sense, does it?

Also consider the fact that 2PAC and his alter-ego (or is it the other way round?) are NOT using MSN or AOL. They're using something a bit more local - which makes it even easier to pin down.

I'm curious as to why people (like Kristy) are having such a hard time digesting the fact that someone could have a sockpuppet (and done a fair bit of duping while they're at it). In fact, I'm curious to know why people would have them at all. If you feel you are exhibiting un-Christian behaviours while under your sockpuppet name, but feel it's OK to do so because you're under your sockpuppet name...well, how does one justify that kind of behaviour? It's YOU who's thinking those thoughts - YOU who is saying those things - no matter what the name on the screen says. Posting un-Christian things under a sockpuppet does not make the behaviour any more correct.

As a point of some interest, one of my favorite hobbies is "trolling" - but not quite this sort. April Fools' day is the best, but there's a lot of fun to be had posting articles written with the intent that:

1. A casual reader will immediately notice that you are in error.
2. A more careful reader will quickly realize that you are joking.

An example might be a claim that "a lunar eclipse is when the sun passes between the earth and the moon, casting the moon into a deep shadow". This claim is wrong in enough ways to suggest that it is unlikely that anyone produced it on purpose.

One of the finest trolls I have ever met mostly hung up his hat when the idiots started being worse than his best efforts, but he was HILARIOUS. He'd post in the D&D newsgroups with questions like "How do I get my players to stop having sex with me and disrupting the game". (Not a common problem for gamers, let me tell you.)

This is different from sock-puppets mostly in that honest trolls admit it when they've been caught.

I actually did this on CF once, sort of - I posted a link to the Onion article about a 5,000 year old T. Rex skeleton, hoping to get a few YEC's to endorse it, despite the *hilarious* writing in the article. Some success.

Still... The 2PAC thing isn't the same ballpark, and is the kind of trolling we refined humorists look down upon.

Your curious why I have a hard time with gunny being 2PAC? Well because they act like two differen't people and I don't want to believe it.

I didn't mean to make you feel unwelcome, I was just trying to explain the process of IP's to you.

And I can understand you not wanting to believe, especially in you believe in someone.

Question

Kristie,

I'm curious as to why you don't feel welcome here? Is it because we have managed to reveal something distasteful about someone you thought you knew?

Anyway, I'm sure you will find that you are welcome here.

But, whether you choose to stay or leave is up to you.

Take care out there.

I find the company here friendlier, non-judgmental, and couldn't give a hairy rat's ass over my 'personal beliefs'.
The people I have known from before have been very nice.

But atheist need to be aware that many of their members do exactly that which they hate about Christians.

When they do not yet know us... they read into our posts. They seem to not want to read what we have said... instead they know what we were implying. They label us as young-Earth, six-day creationist... thumping our Bibles while we stock the fires of hell.

I am not one that buys into the Atheist-evil stereotype.

Still I am told time, and time again, that because I am a Christian that is what I believe by faith.

Sorry... but you would be wrong.

I will admit that I can get very pushy when it comes to children. I have not yet found a way to control that.

I own and operate a daycare. Children are my work, my love, and a big part of my life.

I can't speek for II... haven't been here long enough to learn personalities..

as for CF, the sockpuppets that appear there are usually created by a poster to agree with ones self. I find it quite lame if you can't defend your own position simply on its merits.

hmmm... sock puppets to agree with yourself... sounds like a personality disorder to me.. (where's my DSM)

and WHY would you want a sock puppet that agrees with yourself? It would be much more fun to have one that constantly disagreed with me, told me I was going to burn in hell, called me names...etc...etc...

Oh God I'm so confused.

Does anyone know who I am? I could be anyone.
I thought you were me?

Isn't that what Badfish said?

He isn't ever wrong ... is he???

Now I'm confused too!

It makes me wonder?? Does everyone want to be me?? Or am I the cootie?
