re: Salvation Army alternatives, is Goodwill a non-religious affiliated charity?
One thing that bugs me is this Directory of Christian Businesses that is published and distributed in my hometown down in LA. The general thinking of many christians seem to be, "Christians are more honest, more moral, and therefore, they run a more honest business." I resent the "non-Christians = immoral" implication. |

This is really ironic. Today me and the hubby went walking and the conversation turned to a coworker of his. He recently had a house built for him by a "friend" in his church. He paid $75 a square foot for the house and had to paint it himself, the house had skimpy insulation and he had to buy all sorts of appliances and lighting on his credit card. It was not considered part of the cost.
We feel that he got ripped off really bad. We recently had a house built, we were charged $85/sq ft. We have 6-inch walls, lots of insulation, a huge stone fireplace, and lots of stone work on the outside, and the builder came in within 1% of his estimated cost. The job was well done and we are very happy, and not one bit was religion inspired. ![]() Actually a friend of ours who is a retired building contractor said that the only times he has been screwed over has been by "religious" people. |

That story about incompetent fundies makes me wonder if some people become fundies so that they can seem morally superior despite their failures.

Aha!! You got it!! They don't have to do a damn thing except "turn my life over to Gawd". They cam be passive and self righteous. Waste their lives praying instead of doing good.
Distract themselves from the here and now problems with thoughts of Heaven. If any of you guys ever get a chance to see the documentary "Marjoe", about child evangelist Marjoe Gortner all grown up, see it. I saw it in '72 when it came out. He admitted he steals his moves from Mick Jagger. |

Personally, I go out of my way to not spend my cash at businesses that flaunt their religious beliefs. Chik filet is at the top of the list.
Is it discrimination? I dont think so, but even if it was, I wouldnt give a shit. It's my cash and my choice. Now, why is walmart being 'boycotted?' Do they need to be on the list also? |

Walmart is the evil empire. They undercut small businesses and have destroyed a lot of downtowns in small cities, all over the country. Some states, like Vermont, are now voting against WalMart. Also, any time employees try to organize to vote on a union representation, they shut the store down and fire everybody. Not to mention wasting the emplohyees' time with anti-union propaganda produced by the right wing spawn of Satan.
Walmart has this "Made in the USA" campaign but most of their stuff is made in Third World sweatshops where people work for 50c a day or whatever, and there are no labor laws, minimum wage laws, child labor laws or anything. Some economist figured out what happens when Wally World comes in. There is no net gain in money in the community because damn near everybody working there is making minimum wage and is listed as part time so they don't have to pay overtime. They also have been sued in numerous states for not paying overtime which is off the clock. Employees are forced to clock out and then stay late cleaning up the store while it is closed. Me, I go to Target. They donate 5% of their profits to charity weekly and I hear they are a good place to work. They are based in Minneapolis which is a lot more liberal than Bentonville, Arkansas. I also buy New Balance sneakers. They are made in the USA and come in narrow widths. |

and there is some talk about them taking certain products out of their store because they are not "christian-like" products ie: a magazine that has a lot of sexy women in bikinis. and they openly discriminate against people who are not christian.
