Default "Server Too Busy" too frequent

I am getting the "Sorry, but the server is too busy at the moment." way too often.

I believe the vBulletin admin setting for the NIX Load Limit is set too conservatively.

It is currently at 6. Bill has tried it at a number of different settings.

Note how much slowness we have been getting also. Something's going on!

It is probably a week or two away. I hope to get it done before I leave for the Lake Hypatia gathering on the 4th of July.

It is set at 6, plus a hack to disable searches if the load goes over 2 (for non-Admins; Admins can still do searches up to 4). The VBB recommended load limit is 5, but I found that to be just a tad bit low. Frankly, since there is only one CPU on this server, anything over 2 is "overloaded."

As things sit, I've been massaging things for so long now, and to such a degree (mostly the MySQL configuration parameters, which have a great deal to do with the "Server Busy" problem), that I don't see making any other changes prior to implementing the new server, sometime within the next week or two.

I suggest setting it at 15 or even zero.

You can backup the database as a precaution and try and see what happens.

No.

The higher you set it, the more "out of control" the server gets before it goes into "self-preservation mode." I tried setting it to a much higher value and it took over half an hour to get itself back under control again. There were too many "stacked up requests," and people were hitting the "Reload" button (and stacking up even more requests) long before the server was ready to receive anything new.

The current value of 6 was chosen somewhat empirically, based upon how long it seems to take for the server to get itself back under control again, once it "goes wild." Going to a larger value (or to zero) would simply lock up the server for an exponentially longer amount of time.

Is there any way to give priority to those posting messages as opposed to reading them? That would cut down on the dupes.
