It has been mentionned in another thread that we only average out to 5 or 6 atheists registered on Atheist Meetup (forgot url, oh, atheists.meetup.com )
Anyways, it would be standard acceptance to suppose at least 20 % of the places do not have sufficient people, since the theoretical minimum is 5. I however, refuse to back down! I'd wish to speak to one rational individual to compensate for the countless idiots I see daily (irrespective of their religion) Does your town suffer from a lack of people ? If you can get even 2 people, post here to say that you are willing to go the distance with your desire to meet people from here with co-ordinates and everything. The time is Tuesday at 19:00, of your timezone of course. BTW, should there be a topic we all tackle universally and discuss ? Maybe a common link to all the struggling towns in not necessarily coming out of the closet but getting off our ass ? 1st town to mention : Ottawa, Ontario. Details to be posted by FoE once he replies, so I can confirm we're 2 :P |

Same problem, different town.
Last time, my hopes were gotten up because we had decided to vote for the same place, and a meeting was set up, but not enough people RSVPed to confirm the meeting! ![]() This time, the meeting was cancelled. ![]() We have about seven people listed for our town, but it seems that only three or so are interested (including me) in doing anything about it. One way to leave a message for the others, that I used, is to use the message place to request that everybody vote for the same venue, or use your own message line to do the same. That's how I "communicated" with the others in my area on the meetup board. Too bad it didn't work. Plus, just because your meeting is cancelled, does not mean that you can't meet anyone at a venue. Put a message in your message area that the others can read so you can try to meet them, even if there is less than five RSVPs. Why is five the magic number for these meetups anyway? ![]() NPM |

I'm registered on it. Have been for months. I've yet to see anyone else from my town ever registered there though.

I took a look at the atheist meet-up page a few days ago. It looks to me like the meets are just too spread out. I'd suggest less cities, more people per city.
I'm in northern CA near the 101, in Cotati. I could meet with a few people in Santa Rosa, going north. Or I could meet with a few in Novato, going south, or San Rafael farther south. I live about 50 miles north of San Francisco and I wouldn't mind traveling that distance to meet with more people. If the people in Santa Rosa, Novato, and San Rafael travelled to San Fran we could have a decent size meeting. |

Well my situation isn't as dire as some people's here. My friends are mostly atheists and i don't work with any theists either. My Dad and my sister are atheists. So i may not have the same thirst to meet atheists as some people. But i do find the idea of meeting someone from this board in real life!

![]() But I always like to meet new friends, especially those who I will already know I have something in common with. Furthermore, there's just the whole strength in numbers concept. Living in the bible belt as I do (Southern Indiana), I can somewhat identify my being an atheist with homosexuals who don't want to come out of the closet. If people find out you're an atheist around here, it can be very bad news. I tend to not broadcast it much and I know that some people who have done so have gotten themselves verbally and even sometimes physically assaulted for it. |

For those of you who have not gotten to meet other infidels IRL, it can be a lot of fun and a great way to make instant close friends- the things we share in common (unbelief; computer, scientific and/or technical literacy; and, often, a rather liberal outlook on life and politics) are all too rare, especially in the US.
We Georgia infidels have had several get-togethers; the folks in Colorado have had more, and other groups are forming all the time. Just recently, some of our British regulars got together in Oxford. If any infidels in Georgia (or the southeastern US) want to get details of our planned gatherings, feel free to contact me, southernhybrid, Putney Swope, Rufus Atticus, Wilderness- one of us will know. I plan to attend the proceedings at Lake Hypatia in Alabama on the 4th of July. Anyone else going? (See the ad at the top of the page!) |

Hi gang.
It was through the "meet-up" thing on the net that I found out about a group called the "Free Inquiry Forum". It is an informal group that meets up in Sarasota every Thursday evening. The funny thing is that no one, including the founding member of the group, knows just how they got listed with the Meet-up site. It's a fun group and consists of ages from High School teenagers to people well into their eighties. We meet in a bar and grill that has a nice secluded outside patio area, and ervryone just starts showing up and grabbing tables and chairs. I've seen as many as 15 at a time, and it seems to be growing. The waitstaff now recognize most of the regulars. We sometimes talk over three hours. I have taken three other people with me who are atheists from my UUA group and they loved it. Sometimes we get Christians who show up and it gets lively I can tell you. (but in a nice way). Most of the group are freethinkers, atheists/agnostics, one or two Wiccans, a couple of pantheists (I think). The founder is a young guy whose mother makes occasional appearances (she is a conservative Christian and we've locked horns once already). Th guy who is the founder is a member of the Humanists of the Sarasota Bay Area, and this thing at the bar and grill is kind of an offshoot of that. They put on good speakers from time to time too. |

Ok here's one for Denver (I didn't plan it but I'll be there):
The Bohemian Bean (great coffee, free-parking), 501 East 19th Ave, Denver, CO on Tuesday, June 17 @ 7:00PM To find out more info, I think you have to register at this site: http://www.meetup.com/ And type in Denver as the city - you'll see the atheist meetup site. scigirl (Angela on that site) |
