SE,

Since it doesn't sound like your acne is all that bad, I'd definitely suggest giving Proactiv a try. I had mild to moderate acne from high school through college. I kept hoping it would go away, but no luck. Other OTC products helped a little, but not much. I finally tried Proactiv, and I've got to say, it's great. It's kind of a pain and I used to skip it every once in a while and I'd regret it because I'd get a breakout that would take 1-2 weeks to get rid of. It will probably take a few weeks before you notice a big difference, but give it a try.

I guess it's safe to say that you've never had a moderate to severe case of acne. Prolonged cases of acne can be devastating for self-esteem. Imagine waking up every morning and staring at all those red spots, whiteheads, and blackheads on your face. That would bring anybody's esteem crashing down not to mention dozens of insensitive people who think nothing of pointing out the very obvious to the acne sufferers. Besides for many, acne is not a short term problem, it's a chronic problem meaning it'll last for a long long time and require constant daily care even when you're clear just to keep those nasty acne away.

No kidding.

When I was in school many people always poked fun at me because of my acne (mostly my friends who were purposefully being jackasses, but it was still a pain in the neck). And yes, looking in the mirror and seeing what reflects does hurt self-esteem. No wonder I'm a girl repellent.

I used to have the same problem. One day I went to see a movie with a freind. I went to go pee pee , in the restroom and indian woman approached me..she pointed to my forehead and said thats bad i know what you can do to heal it. I could hardly understande her but basically she told me to apply egg yoke to my face every night because bed..i thought it sounded crazy but i would do anything to get rid of it..so i tryed the egg yoke trick and it worked! i think it has something to do with the vitamin E ..well I hope this helps! good luck!

Egg yoke? Raw from out of the egg shell? Just smear it on my face and say goodnight? Hmm...fascinating.

Hell, if I knew it would work, I would do it!

Yeah, I've got mild acne, the kind where for the most part my face is clear, except for one big honkin' red pimple on my nose or chin. I usually use facewashes containing salacylic acid, such as clean and clear or oxy pads, but basically I keep my face clean, it doesn't get too bad.

BTW, i'm 17, and I eat lots of greasy foods, chocolate, and drink lots of pop, though I notice I break out soon after a workout, or anytime I sweat, whether I wash my face or not.

I dunno about you, but I'd rather not have lots of red, bulging, painful, pustulent, potentially disfiguring lumps all over me. Call me crazy.

I'm 37 and was hoping to have outgrown all of this by now, because it sure is miserable.
Yep. Carrying a backpack on my shoulder was quite painful some days. If I wouldn't think and quickly slide into a chair, I was biting my tongue as a result. Mine wasn't as nearly bad as others.

Pain aside, I truly have to wonder how someone could ask "Why is Acne such a big deal?", unless they believe that expressing frustration with it is akin to relating it to bowel disease. Such a question leads me to believe that individual has led a rather sheltered life - what's the first insult you'll recieve if you have acne and you're in any disagreement (assuming one is necessary)? They'll comment on your "zits".

Something about bright red, painful sores that secrete a thick fluid which greatly increases difficulty to form relationships - especially when it often occurs in a time when that's all you're thinking about - seems to be psychologically damaging to some.

Go figure some find it a "big deal".

Not the first time I've heard this actually, there are a million home remedies for acne. Some do work, skin types can vary significantly and some will respond to simple treatments where expensive medications did nothing.

I know for me, benzoyl-peroxide was like putting gasoline on my face. Even 5% BP was incredibly damaging to my skin and did nothing for my pimples. Accutane was gentler on my face than BP - bizarre, huh?

I used to have quite bad acne, myself. Until I was 31.

It never really bothered me much for the same reason I never comb my hair: I only have 1 mirror in my house, so I don't see myself very often.

My Mum, however was quite obsessed about my acne and used to foist all manner of ointments and pointions on me with little or no success until one day she came accross a brand of soap called 'Clinique'. It's quite expensive but, I have to say, it cleared my spots up completely. It's as if I never had them.

If you are that bothered by your acne, I would certainly reccommend it.
