Fiach - Just to be correct, many of the threes you listed are labeled as triads not trinities....These dieties were associated but not considered aspects of one diety. There are ancient trinities. I can't remember the male example specifically but it had something to do with a supreme fire god who was recognized in hearth fires, fire in the sky (lightning) and fire in the earth (volcanos and hot springs). The three aspects had thier own names but it was stated in the rituals and theology that they were faces of one god.

The aspects of the mother recognized in Wicca are a more well known trinity. Maiden, Mother and Crone are all different faces of the mother goddess.

Vesica,

I wonder if the "one diety" thing is a natural evolution--just the next step in the "my god is more powerful than your god" game...?

This is not an accurate comparison to the Christian concept of the triune Godhead. My body, My "soul" (or personality, or whatever) and my "influence" are not three distinct persons . You might say my body, soul, and influence (I'm still not really getting that last one) make up "me" in the same way that billions of individual atoms make up "me" but each individual atom is not fully "me" in the same way that the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are all separate but all still fully God.

Side point I'd like to add, doodad.

I remember having extreme difficulty imagining three objects of my worship as a child. No matter how hard I tried to imagine them all as one, they were all associated with different stories and different actions, and always got prioritized.

But the priority shifted, because I couldn't decide whether God the Father or Jesus the Son should get top billing.

The Holy Spirit, of course, was good for speaking in tongues and tongues of flame on people's heads, and perhaps inspiring the holy scriptures, but compared to the other two, he was just a parlor magician.

I kept trying to give Jesus top billing, because he was the one who paid the ultimate price, but somehow, it didn't seem right to put the Son before the Father. Besides...the Father had far more examples of his ruthlessness, so he seemed mightier.

The bible only tells you they're equal. But it shows you that God is the mightiest, Jesus is next, and the Holy Ghost comes in a distant third.

No wonder I had so many problems focusing on all three as an object of my affection.

Hi gal, I was hoping we'd meet again. What you have said I can certainly agree with. Knowing something about your childhood experience with religion, I can smpathize with you. It's pretty confusing to a little one to conceptualize three bosses when he or she is used to having one or two at the house. Couple this with the traditional household where I grew up thinking the father (my mortal dad) was the supreme or final authority, and you sense a real snow job coming your way. Little ones aren't completely stupid. Their relative lack of bias helps them to see things for what they are at times. I was fortunate enough to be taught there was a pecking order in the bible, just as there is in the family. The Holy Spirit was a nebulous thing, and I cannot remember what I made of that dude.

My last family was a slum family, and the little ones caught on quickly. They reasoned that with several adults bossing them around that they really didn't have to pay attention to any one of them, including their mother. It was a really
a challenge to get them straightened out, and I lost. I was ready to walk away from it but she spared me the unpleasant task.

Might there be the same problem with those who cannot master the balancing act of trying to obey three divine figures of authority?

Could be diana. Maybe it's a way to overcome the tedium of having to obey more than one master. In secular government triunes can be relatively ineffective if the three parties are not in accord. We essentially have in our system of government with three arms or seats of power. Sometimes two of the three houses can agree, but seldom does all three work together.

Judaism is more of a monotheistic religion than Christianity is, but they apparently have a Holy Spirit of sorts. Any thoughts on how the Judaic spirit stacks up against Jehovah?

On what evidence do you base the assertion that we have a soul?

If you are on this discussion board to, one day, receive evidence of the fact that we are spirits in a body you are IMO wasting your time because that will never come about. Science can proof that I think but never what I think. To prove anything spiritual is physically impossible. You will never, ever be forced to believe something (in itself a spiritual activity) that you don’t want to believe. Precisely that is our human freedom, to keep our minds void and empty of anything spiritual.

You won't find many in this discussion board who agree. Simply stating that this is your belief is (a) really quite dull and (b) not advancing an argument or discussion any more than saying "I like pizza".
----------
(a) That is the nature of the beast, anything it is not interested in is dull.
(b) I hope I’m doing more than just stating a preference. This could be an approach to a problem that humanity has and (including this board) is still trying to get a grip on. It just mayby possible that there are people here who do not dismiss the Bible outright, because of its history and long influence on humanity. It might even contain something valuable between the many dark sayings and mysteries and the violence it contains.

What is a 'plane'?

In this case I meant a discrete level above the body. Until in his mid fifties Swedenborg spent much of his time searching for the physical seat of the soul. While doing this he discovered things about the brain that have only been verified in the last 20 years (e.g. left and right brain). In other words, he was not stupid. In fact I regard him the expert and so far I have not been disappointed. Whatever he says makes sense to me and all I am doing now is sharing that. Sharing, to me, means “take it or leave it.” You think it is dull? Don’t take it.
==================
Have you really read about and understood the problems of dualism? Are you at all interested in what really makes human beings tick or are you happy to make up an answer or have someone else make one up for you and not question it?
------------------
I am no brain-surgeon but dualism holds no problems for me, but that may be because I don’t ask for proof. I accept Swedenborg’s ‘proof’ that during his last 27 years he was almost daily ‘in the spirit.’ (which he did proof, for one, to the queen of Sweden).
His explanation as to what makes people tick does it for me. This also seems to click with Leon James with the Department of Psychology of the University of Hawaii. He wrote the article:
“Substantive Dualism,” Swedenborg's Integration of Biological Theology and Rational Psychology. This and others can be downloaded from there.

The concept of a soul is an elusive and nebulous thing for me. This might make an interesting topic if you care to start one. I can't offer much for starters, or I would.

For starters, it seems to me the soul, at least in the context of religion, is a part of the human body and yet is somewhat independent of the brain and of mortal life. I sometimes associate it with my conscience, but there may be more to it than that.

I think if you will check, you'll find that modalism is not the what you describe and that it is impossible for something to be "the essence" of something without being that thing.
