But I would say

Sauron, Im sorry to disappoint you but it sounded like a hacker done that out of personal interest. Any experienced hacker can do it. counts as a point.

As well as,
DoS attacks dont make any permanent damage to the server. Why would the military do such an immature act?

I would have to say that it was probably NOT US govt or military, primarily because a DoS attack is at the extreme low end of the cracker skill scale. I know a guy, works here in the building with me, who can get into damn near any computer network ever made... He has fun by every once in a while breaking in to his brother's 'puter and changing the system password, encrypting important-looking documents, etc etc. His brother is a security expert who has fun by trying to keep my guy from doing that.

I know for a fact that if he truly wanted to, he could take down al-jazeera, ALL servers associated with al-Jazeera, for good. Or at least for however long it takes to format all fixed media and start over from scratch.

Point being, if the govt/military really wanted to take down al-Jazeera, they did a truly piss-poor job of it.

Liquidrage:

This is getting way too funny... I trust you are enjoying it too.

You're confusing two different issues and I don't believe you understand what a DoS attack is.

I do, but that doesn't matter... sorry, but none of that actually matters to my point... IOW, what part of I clearly gave up that argument in the first words of my second post don't you understand?

You even quoted my, It probably was a patriotic hacker. What more can I add to that? I agree with you there!

So let's try this: All I'm saying is that IF Bush's minions could shut Al Jazeera down, they would shut it down ASAP. The administration's "motive" is an internationally known fact... Powel asked Qatar to shut Al Jazeera down over a year ago. It doesn't matter if 1000x patriotic crackers are capable, AND have probable motives. The CIA is certainly capable as well... if a "regular American citizen" can do it just for fun, then a "regular American citizen" who happens to be a CIA computer geek can do it just for fun too. He'd probably get a promotion just for the laughs it would give Carl Rove.

So, I shall stand by my simple claim that no one has a better motive for shutting Al Jazeera down than the old farts in Washington who are providing Al Jazeera with all their nifty headlines.

Basically, this is another form of a DoS attack. In essence, they were Slashdotted

Is that enough of a sense of humor for you?

Altho I ain't no computer geek, I fully understand the concept of DoS attacks... in my own ungeeky way, I have previously stated around here that Al Jazeera is often too busy and one must keep trying to get thru. It's all the same to a lazy, computer-disadvantaged amateur. And maybe for that reason, I do not see any humor in all that... so I reckon we're even on that score. Touch.

Far out! When I went to post this, I got a...
The server is too busy at the moment. Please try again later.

Hackers making it intermittetly unavailable?! It sounds like they don't know what they are talking about!

I would figure they feel they have been subjected to a DoS attack. However, without carefully checking the IP's from which requests are coming there's no way to tell the difference between that and simply getting Farked.

We've seen it ourselves with that "If you've set yourself on fire" thread. The system was acting up severely but nobody was attacking us.
