Ok, recently I've been having a completely random problem with my computer. Occasionally, when powered down, the fan will start up and the status light turn on. Sometimes the speakers start making a hideous screeching noise. Nothing wrong with the computer otherwise. (starts up fine if I hit the power button while it's doing this).

Hmmm, that does sound great. You might want to get a can of compressed air and blow away any dust that may have collected around the power switch. Perhaps there's a weak connection that's causing the machine to think it's turned on and off? Other than that, I can't think of anything off the top of my head. Does it pass diagnostics during boot-up?

well, for the longest time the fan made screeching noises. If we tilted the computer up until they stopped and gently put it down, they went away. We deduced that the fan must have been pulling on a loose cable
That doesn't happen anymore, and this started happening after it did. I guess the fan must have finally pulled out or severed the cable |

Your computer may be set to turn itself on at specific times to perform maintenance tasks. E.g., virus scanning.
How often does it happen? Is it always at the same time? With electronics I always say if the functionality has not degraded, don't mess with it. ![]() |

mac_philo's got a point. There may be a scheduled wake-up that's causing the behavior you're seeing. Serves me right for not keeping up with recent changes in consumer computers.
