Yes, of course the U.S. is "imperialistic."
Michael Parenti - Imperialism 101 The important point is that imperialism is a system, not a bad idea or bad policy, a system and a stage of capitalism. Lenin's Imperialism: The highest stage of capitalism |

I answer with an unqualified yes. Absolutely unqualified. The United States is and has been an empire, like any other that has appeared in history, except with unprecedented kill power.
The transgressions of its birth-mother, Great Britain, which caused the United States to declare its independance and fight a Revolutionary War, truly pale and wither into near insignificance in comparison to what the U.S. has perpetrated in its march toward world domination. Time to wake up. |

And in our next thread, we will examine whether the Pope is Catholic.

Not only imperialistic but arrogant to boot. Bush has been saying anybody who doesn't go along with him is irrelevant. There you have it: I'm bigger and stronger than you and if you don't support my plan you are irrelevant. France is irrelevant, Germany is irrelevant, Belgium too, and soon China will be. The man is a menace who doesn't have any idea how to handle world affairs without threats.

Hey Zar and Moon,
I have been away for a long time, but remember you from some of our earlier discussions. Anyway, here is my 2 cents... It seems to me that the imperialist or expansionist countries in past history (such as Britian, Spain, or such) forced themselves on others in a military fashion to include foriegn lands into their kingdoms. I suppose an argument could be made that we (US) are doing just that in Afganistan and possibly soon in Iraq. Just for the record, I don't agree with our current president's policy of "pre-emptive strikes". But really, look at the history of war in this past century - particularly WW2. We could have "taken over" territories all over the world in 1945, but instead spent billions in helping rebuild our former enemies countries (Japan, Germany) and helped install democratic type governments. Contrast that with what the Soviet Union did with the Baltic states and East Germany. True, we are very guilty of capitalistic expansion. This is the origin of the "Ugly American" tag. I guess I generally disagree with the view that America is "Imperialistic", but like many, I worry about where the present administration is leading this country. I feel like I am in a small boat on a large wave and have no control over where I will land. |

Yes, but Iraq is asking for it. Its an outlaw state thats violating the wishes of the UN.

Good thing that the best system out there although still flawed is the one "imperialistic". Hopefully soon the whole world will be the one United Federation of all States

Was good to hear a former French official say on the radio today that he thought the American people were not supportive of Bush. Hope the rest of the world realizes it. |
