Thumbs up League of Extraordinary Gentlemen

I got this comic since it came so highly recommeded by board members here... and holy shit, this comic is great. The dialogue is super and the characters are very interesting. And mostly... the art is fucking incredible.

However, seeing the movie preview again ive got a strong feeling its gonna suck. I mean why did they have to make Quartermain the boss instead of the woman... means they will get rid of the opium janks that his character goes through. sigh.

Well, the movie probably will suck, but at least you discovered a great new comic.

I just finished reading the First trade paperback volume and Im afraid I wasnt that impressed. Its diverting enough but it mainly seems to be an exercise in pastiche and literary name dropping. I actually found I preferred the short Alan Quatermain story at the end more than the actual story itself. Maybe it was just because it was staring up, perhaps the subsequent volumes are better. I admit that I thought the cover which was in Rupert the Bear style with rhyming was absolutely hilarious.

I didnt think it was up to the standard of From Hell, Halo Jones or Watchmen. Alan Moore, even off his game, is still strides ahead of most of the tat that comes out though.

I haven't read much other alan more so I can't compare, but I thought the story line was great (keeping in mind that its mocking old genres) and the art was just fantastic.

Read From Hell - absolutely fascinating. I skipped work just so I could finish it in one day.

If you feel like a real comic-book history lesson, go way back and pick up the Saga Of The Swamp Thing trade paperbacks that collect Alan Moore's early-80s run. Astonishing stuff, that still beats a heavy proportion of modern comic writing into a cocked hat.

You'll also want to read From Hell and especially Watchmen, but I find that the old Swamp Things are the ones I re-read most, followed by V For Vendetta.
