However, if you have HIV, you're probably going to get AIDs before you go to Mars.

The test is (or was) routinely given to newborn babies in New York City hospitals. It was a bit of a scandal, because the mothers of the babies who had tested positive, which was a good indicator that the mothers would also test positive, were not notified of the test results because of confidentiality rules. Those rules were put in place at the behest of gay activists who were, quite rightly, afraid of discrimination (employment, insurance, violence). Interestingly, rapists are not required to test or disclose the results of their tests to their victims.

I believe that couples need HIV testing in order to qualify for a marriage license in NY. All immigrants are required to take the test as well. From what I hear on TV (not exactly reliable), AIDS testing is part of the dating ritual here.
