Now the lenses of another commercial satellite, QuickBird, operated by DigitalGlobe of Longmont, Colorado is on the prowl. "QuickBird is capable of shedding more light on what the anomaly may or may not be," Taylor said.

QuickBird was lofted in October 2001 and is billed as the world's highest resolution commercial imaging satellite. It can see things 2-feet (61-centimeters) across.

"We have acquired four images of Mt. Ararat and all have been cloud covered to date," said Chuck Herring, Director of Marketing Communications for DigitalGlobe. "We continue to task this event and will get Porcher Taylor an image as soon as we get a good image," he told SPACE.com.
Actually, the satellite wasn't commissioned specifically to shoot pictures in search of a mythical boat made of "gopher" wood. It was put up there by businessmen who knew they had a market.

The QuickBird is sun-sychronous, which means it is in an orbit that keeps it between the sun and the earth. It shoots pictures as it passes particular spots daily, and the specificity of the pictures it shoots are dependant upon what specific customers have offered to pay for. These religious nutjobs are just another cash-paying customer to them.

From QuickBird Imaging Satellite Ready for Duty:

The total verification and calibration period for QuickBird is about 120 days, Herring said. "So we plan to start operations in the February timeframe. We plan to begin in first quarter by providing imagery to our master distributors and select customers. Second quarter we will open to our entire reseller network and open for full commercial operations by beginning of the third quarter," he said.
I do think there are better things religious nuts can do with their money than buy satellite pictures in search of evidence of a boat, though. Like, say...feed the hungry, buy antibiotics and vaccinations for third world countries, educate the ignorant....(Strike that last suggestion. For it is written, if the blind lead the blind, they shall both fall into the ditch.)

They're not the only ones to come up with such a scheme:

How about a replica of the Minnow with wax figures of the seven castaways? Mary Ann's figure should be topless!

Whoa! Those are great concepts! Why haven't the religious nuts thought of this? Oh, I know. The people in those countries are doubtless largely not Christian, therefore God has abandoned them to condemnation, or something (Beavis & Butthead mode on)
