The founders religious beliefs only are an issue when you try to interpret the meaning of the First Amendment.

In that case, it is sufficient to say that, while the founders may have been some variety of Christian, they clearly did not intend for the government to be Christian, to be based on Christianity, or to either tell the churches what to preach or to allow the churches to tell the civil government what to do.

Understanding and knowing our heritage shouldn't be confused with living in the past is something that needs to be said, I believe.
