I just read in USA Today that a family in Iraq has named their son George Bush. Does anyone want to start a poll on how long this poor child will live?

I can already see the headlines in a few years.

About 10 years ago, there was this man --around Yokohamma I think it was-- that named his son "Devil" or sometrhing like it.
"Oni" --the Jap word for Devil
I don;t think it was this, but a similar word in meaning.

Anyway, the reason it was in the papers for a couple of years is because that paternalistic, Jap-gov't-knows-what's-good-for-you, bureacraps denied the infant its chosen name and this was being fought-out in Court.

is it too troublesome to type out "Japanese"? Because Jap is a racial slur and while I don't think you were being racist, it would be wise to establish this before a flame war erupts

Oni is more like a demon, rather than Devil. They are generally shown as large, brightly colored giants with horns and sharp teeth. Its not a proper noun, there are a bunch of them, each with their own name, presumably.

I remember this case. The big problem is that there is a register of legally-allowed names. If you marry a Japanese woman and have children, the kids must be named using something off the register, or they can't have Japanese citizenship.
Yet more racist bull from the Japanese government.
