Female. Not only is it a cliche (atheist females), but you also get the prospect of lesbianism

Well, your character influence has spoken and said you should make her female. That's good enough for me.

Female it is. I will find a way to show what I come up with, for those who might be interested! (the web portfolio site I use sux, I have to find something better, but I have a few other options.)

Though the male Atheist and fem Anarchist is intrigueing too. Pathetically enough, I had never heard of Emma Goldman until I saw Ragtime. Then all of a sudden, I'm hearing all quotes from her.

I see the whole thing, though I thought the atheist male was the cliche--storywise, anyway. Ya know, the girls are always emotional, thinking emotionally, and the guy is rational so therefore the guy is the atheist. I don't know when I've seen a female atheist in a story, come to think of it, it's always a guy. (and they always end up "believing", usually in Christianity, and they usually only call themselves atheist because they're angry at the universe) I hate those stories. I love that M. Night's stuff otherwise, but I saw Signs in the drive-in and will not waste good money on the dvd.

Should this femal atheist have been a believer in the past, or not? Any thoughts on that? Should she be deceptively normal or have a chip on her shoulder? I'd love to know what actual atheists would like to see here, so I don't want to make a decision yet.

Do you mean a chip on her shoulder regarding religion? I think absolutely not, because then religious types will take that as some sort of Angry At God and Hates God thing, instead of a rational Doesn't Believe in God thing. If you know what I mean.

The Atheist needs to be female if only because any Proper Anarchist should have a bushy, disorderly beard (and a bomb in his hand) - so he has to be a guy.

Rational. Good idea. I didn't even think of it. I think the "Ronin" style edge (remember when he was writing in all italics, being all cryptic?) could be enough to give the character a dramatic edge without making her emotional or angry. I can see how that would take away from rather than add to the character.

Anyone have any opinions on her earlier religious status? Former believer or lifelong non-believer?

Thumbs up

Estne volumen in toga, an solum tibi libet me videre?

I think she should have always been an atheist. But perhaps grew up with many theists around here - cultist type theists - fundies. She was never brainwashed, and her strength and balance comes from that. But she's a regular tank girl when it comes to revealing the bullshit and saving people from dogma. She's a clever bitch super heroine, with a great deal of moral fibre (not in any biblical sense of the word - but definitely in her humanity), and a wonderful sense of fun as she usurps those godbot leaders and followers, and their tacky beliefs, and frees the people! Yay for her!!

I assume that one of her "super" powers will be to see through bullshit?
