I wrote the professor a letter of support, saying the student obviously didn't have a clue as to what scientific method and thought was and included a quote by Carl Sagan, who said in his book "Demon Haunted World":

"Science is a bulwark against mysticism, against superstition, against religion misapplied to where it has no business being."

A few months ago, I engaged a pair of "legally, there is no evidence for evolution" types on a board out of - little surprise - Florida.

In one post, one of the pair, who claimed to have a master's degree in chemistry, chided me, saying that I also still "probably believe the myth that germs cause disease."

I aksed him what DID cause disease, and I got the run around - some schtick about it never "being proved in court" or some such BS.

I am now of the mind that when dealing with creationists, instead of assuming that they might be intelligent and scientifically literate, just deluded or perhaps underducated in the appropriate science, that instead they should be considered brainwashed dolts.

But hey, thats just me

If it had been a science board, I'd say he was trying to be a chemistry-chauvanist. I can't imagine a chemistry-chauvanist argument, but I can see a biophysicist saying "Germs are made up of molecules and it's the molecules, interfering with other molecules indigenous to the body that brings about disease," or some such forrest / trees nonsense to make himself feel good about his field of study.

But, alas, it was not a science board.

Happy W. – Do you have any quick links about the ritual washing of Hygeia? I got into with a particularly wacko creato a couple months ago. He/she claimed the part in Numbers that talks about blood being unclean and washing hands in running water proved the Bible was from god since Noah didn’t know about germs.

I figured there had to be similar material in most cultural traditions, but I was trying to focus on some other ideas.

I'd like to think the recommendations I got from my engineering professors and religion studies professor were based on their view of my character and ability to be a professional, not because it was routine! The recommendations my engineering teachers gave me needed to come from teachers that thought that I'd be worth a Master's degree in Civil Engineering. That I'd be a competant professional. You just don't give master degrees to people in the fields of engineering and medicine, it can be dangerous! People's lives are in the balance.

If one of my professors didn't think I was capable of becoming a competant professional, I wouldn't have gone crying about it. They are the professionals of a critical profession. Recommendations shouldn't be taken lightly.

And this is ignoring the obvious point. This person's denial of evolution is equivalent to a history major's denial of the holocaust. I am proud that Texas Tech is holding out. It is their right to do so.
