I am sure this has occured to you, but let us say that there is life after death. All experience points to the very real possibility of a long, painful, miserable and pointless degradation before you actually die. And of course if you adhear to a theism such as Christianity and you arrange your death then you go to hell and get to experience an even more pointless, painful and miserable existence for eternity. Emotional, haven't you figured out yet that your problems have nothing to do with death itself, it is the existing part that scares you. As an atheist you can rest peaceful in the knowledge that when it is over it is over. (I still think you have a phobic compulsion and none of this will have any effect on how you feel in any way.)
