Excellent point, and yet I have seen creationists trumpet the "Cretaceous explosion" over and over as fossil evidence of the "sudden origin" of life on earth, i.e., marking the moment of creation. It would seem to make more sense to an OEC but even YECs seem to use this kind of reasoning.

I haven't read all of the links from here so maybe one of them covers this.

One suggestion for the rapid diversification of body plans during the 'explosion' is the development of the protohox gene cluster.

Of course, you realize you have just cruelly added another 600 page book to my already excessively long reading list this summer, don't you?
I've been hacking away at just that volume myself recently. It's a bit of a struggle for a poor young dullard like myself, but what I have read is exponentially more interesting than any science I have read before. His introduction speaks of some important large scale alterations from previous editions (including the cambrian explosion chapter in particular), so make sure you get the most recent.
