Actually, given the hatred so many Republicans and conservatives have for Clinton I think this could turn out to be a very positive statement. I mean if the most hated liar ever thinks what Bush did was OK, maybe some of the constituents that loathe Clinton so much will see Bush for the liar he is. Two peas in a pod ya know!

Too bad they didn't think so. =/
I agree, it could be a very shrewd move on Clinton's part, and even more so if the Dems actually asked him to do that. |

While I would have enjoyed a scathing admonition from Clinton to Bush, I find his response rather graceful.
Maybe I would have just said, let's focus on what's happening right now, and deal with these problems soon enough--that way, it still gives an opening for criticism. Now that I think about it: "I mean, you can't make as many calls as you have to make without messing up once in awhile." When you have as much power in your hands as the President of the United States, we should hope that no mistakes are made. However, it is allowable to some degree. On the other hand, knowing what we know about the Uraniam lie, it is inexcusable for him to make that kind of mistake, in the face of all the contrary assertions given. Basically, a mistake of this magnitude should not be pardoned. |

I agree that this is good.
Every politician and his dog has been trying to distance themselves from Clinton for years. If he becomes Bush's friend, the radical right-wingers won't want to vote for Bush and the Democrats wouldn't vote for Bush if Jesus came down from Heaven to give an endorsement. That means that there would be less pro-Bush votes to counter the antis. Yay Clinton! Have a cigar. ![]() |

Someone I was talking to on IRC was pointing out to me that he didn't actually say whether it was right or wrong... just that everyone makes mistakes which is true... so it wasn't even a pardon per say. This gets more interesting...

Even though I never voted for Clinton, it's times like these that allow me a certain measure of respect for the man.
I don't really know what, if any ulterior motives he had in making those statements, but at this point I'll give him the benefit of the doubt and believe that he's simply being empathetic towards Bush. Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar I guess. |

I like Clinton generally, but I have to say he's not really in a position to spew vitriol at the Bush administration for (of all things) lying. Even though I think there's a world of difference between lying about a blow job and lying about war, Clinton's reputation for dishonesty still precedes him.
I dunno how heavily that factored into his comments, but I'm sure it did. |
