Default What.... the... hell..?!

Ok this is for all of you anime fans out there. According to This Press Release a live action movie of the popular anime Neon Genesis Evangelion is being made by ADV Films and will use the same special effects company that did the effects for Lord of the Rings.

I have three questions:

1. What.... the.... hell?

2. How in the world do the plan to cram the intricate and complex plot and themes of EVA into a 2 hour movie?

3. Where are they going to find a director that is depressed enough to do this movie?

Disney will buy the rights, and switch it to a cartoon from anime.

Ummm.... ADV is an american company and owns the rights for distribution of the show and is the company that is making the movie. Disney can't touch it. Disney wouldn't even WANT to touch it if it could.

1. Yer, same reaction here, but the idea of a full CG EVA going the tonk in Tokyo2 gets me all warm and fuzzy. Mmmm CG AT fields.

2. They won't. No American company is going to delve into the whole Xian/Jewish myths. They will be Aliens, not Angels. The story will suck, but it will ge good looking suckage. Maybe a trilogy (they are all the rave these days).

3. Dunno why but I'd love to see Luc Besson do this....

As long as Shinji still jacks off to an unconcious Asuka I'll be happy

Actually, this seems to me like a great way to force the directors and filmakers to "cut the fat" out of Eva (specifically, the clip show(duh), the two completely OOC Rei episodes, the Jet Alone episoide, the craptacular TV series ending, the OMG WHO IS THE FOURTH CHILD IT'S A HUGE MYSTERY NO ONE KNOWS!!!! episodes, I can probably think of more with a little more time). You may have well asked "how can they cram 60+ years of comic book plot lines into a 2-hour movie?" for the X-Men movies. They won't: probably, the plots of one or two episodes will get merged together to make a feature-length film, with the ending open for a sequel, which will be the storylines of other episodes.

Blah. The fighting was the best animation in the whole show, CG is just gratuitious. And could you imagine the "Eva Flatley, Lord of the Dance" episode where Asuka and Shinji kick ass to classical music working in any other medium besides animation?

The only thing that will be lost by chucking out the braindead use of religious symbols (Jesus was the guy who got crucified, Anno, not Lilith) is some cool looking backdrops.

No, the plot won't suck for the lack of it. Religion had little to do with the storyline itself, as the makers of the show admit:

Quote:
The cross shaped explosions, the Kabalah, and all other references do have religious roots and do have relevance to Evangelion but it is very important to remember that Eva is a work of fiction and should not have it's symbols taken that seriously. I think that Mamorou Oshii (director of "Ghost in The Shell" and "Patlabor") described religious elements in anime best when he said "These are used as the prototype for the stories; not for religious reasons, but for ideology and literary inspiration".

Finally, at the Otakon anime convention held in 2001, assistant director Kazuya Tsurumaki (who was the director of The End of Evangelion: Episode 25' Air - while Anno personally undetook The End of Evangelion: Episode 26' Sincerely Yours and acted as Chief Director) was asked directly what relvance Christianity had to Evangelion. This was his reply:
Tsurumaki: There are a lot of giant robot shows in Japan, and we did want our story to have a religious theme to help distinguish us.
Because Christianity is an uncommon religion in Japan we thought it would be mysterious. None of the staff who worked on Eva are Christians.
There is no actual Christian meaning to the show, we just thought the visual symbols of Christianity look cool. If we had known the show would get
distributed in the US and Europe we might have rethought that choice.

So, while Evangelion's basic plot elements are borrowed from some religious texts and myths, they merely act as inspiration for a different story. They are just there for aesthetics
