The argument from Philo is pretty interesting; however, I think it is ultimately unsound. First, his arguments that omniscience and omnipotence imply omnipresence seem quite weak. Second, it doesn't seem to follow from "God is present in x" that "x is a part of God's self." The former is what is implied by omnipresence, but the latter is what is necessary to make the argument work. But consider the following thought experiment: I am "present" in this room in the sense that I am inside of it; it does not follow from this that I am a part of the room. If the room were conscious, could it intelligibly say that I am a part of its "self"? Probably not.
Sincerely, Philip |
