gudur,

ignoring my logic with a quote from Wilde, I am shocked.

Plus pz was just offering you medical alternatives. You should be more open to modern medicine and your friends' concern for your health. Elephantitis and brass balls can be serioius conditions that need treatment.

First, I'm well aware that probably more than 95% of what goes under the names of chiropractic & Feng Shui is indeed the aforementioned fecal matter of a male bovine.

However, the one part of chiropractic that medical doctors regard as possibly having some validity--spinal manipulation therapy--does involve more than massage and may be an effective treatment for lower back pain. True, you probably don't really need an entire profession dedicated to SMT. However, this report linked to from www.chirobase.org, a skeptical Web site, suggests that one reason chiropractic is thriving is that physicians are typically "not well-trained in the management of common musculoskeletal complaints" and that "The specialists who have been adequately trained in musculoskeletal medicine--neurologists, orthopedists, physiatrists, and rheumatologists--are relatively scarce and inaccessible, can be expensive, focus on cases more exotic than those of ordinary aches, and tend to treat musculoskeletal problems aggressively." The report also states that:
Quote:
Some physical therapists have most of the skills necessary for treating musculoskeletal problems, but physical therapists are not "portal of entry" practitioners (i.e., they can lawfully treat only patients whom physicians have referred to them) and are not adequately trained to serve as such.

It is the important niche described above that chiropractors have filled. A consistent finding from re-search on chiropractic is that, even when the objective results of nonchiropractic medical treatment and those of SMT are identical, chiropractic patients appear more satisfied than do the patients of medical doctors.
On the matter of Feng Shui, you're right, it doesn't confer any more benefits than good interior design does. However, a poster in the "Bullshit!" newsgroup noted that:
Quote:
The clip on Feng Shui seems to focus on color and Penn just seems to make fun of it rather than disproving it, also neglecting that the effects of color are an ergonomic reality. There have been many studies on color by real live scientists (some of whom I know way too well), including the infamous pink holding cell one that showed that color does effect people's mood and perception providing they can see color.

GRRRRRRRR!!!!

But, as an aside, I saw a programme on the raising of sterilised maggots for medical purposes. They are exceptional at cleaning up dead and diseased/infected flesh while leaving the healthy flesh as is. http://virtual-u.sfu.ca/mediapr/Rele...0/Maggots.html

Thanks, Lunachick, you alerted me to a mistake I'ld made in a previous post by leaving out a clause.

Yep, they discovered yet again in the American Civil war that maggots deliberately left in deep or messy wounds dramatically reduce the chances of gangrene and gas gangrene; there have been cases throughout history of deliberately exposing wounds to flies, so that the flies could lay eggs which hatched maggots, in order to save the patient from gangrene and other infections.

Thumbs down snail slime

The only thing of interest in snail slime is allantoin. It's a major component of comfrey as well, so why bother with the snails? Hell, you can buy the stuff in purified form and mix it into your favorite facial cream (which costs about 1/4 of what you'd pay if you bought it pre-mixed). So using the snails really is just a gimick, even if it may have some small benefit from the allantoin.
