From above the central stones are arranged in a horsehoe shape with the opening aligned with a large single stone about 50 ft away. At a particular time of the year the rising sun casts the shadow of the single stone into the centre of the henge where for a few minutes the tip of the shadow rests on the "altar" stone.
This could be a representation of sex with the henge representing the womb and the standing stone the phallus or it could be a coincidence. Unfortunately for those who think it may be a coincidence Newgrange has exactly the same alignment properties and has a vagina carved on the large stone entranceway and at Avebury a similar alignment is eveident although the large phallus stone was removed several centuries ago. When you also note that 40 miles away at Cerne Abas there is an enormous hill carving of a chap with a huge erect (40ft long or so) penis I think it fair to say that the ancients were pretty keen on sexual representations, possibly connected with fertility rights or the farming calender. Then again it wouldn't be so surprising that the sexual imagery was true, would it? Those pagans who built Stonehenge were probably obsessed with sex and fertility like all good pagans are.

I have a couple of things to say. One is that, as Amen-Moses correctly pointed out, the supposed female genitalia are viewed from above Stonehenge. (When you think about it, it makes sense, being above that is). Secondly, I have to make the observation that there are some guys who would stick their dick in there. |

News flash: The Washington Monument suddenly launched itself from its base today, and was last seen over the Atlantic on a direct course to the nether parts of England...

About 3 or 4 years ago, there was a documentary on the Discovery Channel about some professor of ancient history who studied the sexual imagery in ancient structures. Both me and the hubby were rolling on the the floor we were laughing so hard. The professor was going into detail about how the shadow of the male stone would touch the female stone on a certain day of the year. Then he went on and on about some vulva shaped cave opening in the American southwest.
My first comment was "Man, this guy desperately needs to get laid." Hubby commented that he wouldn't mind traveling all over the world in order to imagine penises and vaginas everywhere. What a job, I guess someone has to do it. ![]() |
