The idea of a census as described in the Bible is implausible in itself. I think there was a thread here a while back discussing it.

Coupled with a complete lack of record of any other census where one has to go back to one's ancestral town -- if such a census happened, then lots of historians would mention all the grumbling it would provoke.

This would have required some acrobatic skill on the part of Mary, since a manger is an eating-trough located in a stable or barn. I have heard that Jebus was laid in a manger (which would do nicely as an impromptu crib) but I always assumed that was after he was born, cord cut, all that stuff. Assuming he existed that is, which I don't think he did.

He went to give an account of himself, like a confession. Joyce held that Joseph was pregnant with despair and needed to give an account of himselfs and this is how Christ was born from Joseph.
