Why not just partition your hard disk and install Linux and Windows side by side? I'm planning on using Linux for my programming needs and Windows for other software (including games) that are not supported by Linux.

Even worse is RTS. I heard that they actually had to tone down the difficulty severely for N64 StarCraft to make up for not being able to use a mouse. |

The Microsoftian OSes delete the master boot record and install a boot loader of their own that does not recognise Linux as an option. You should install the MS OS first and Linux second, that way you'll get the Linux boot loader (LILO or GRUB, whichever you choose) on your master boot record.

While MAME is only an arcade emulator, it plays a vast library of arcade games, including NEO-GEO arcade games. Pretty impressive. Nonetheless, there are emulators for the following and more in Linux: Playstation Nintendo 64 Super Nintendo Game Boy (normal, color & advance) Genesis Atari Nintendo Apple ii Commodore 64 Lucasarts games (SCUMM engine) Ultima 7 etc etc etc I'm sure I've missed quite alot. ![]() In addition, there are many commercial games ported to Linux, that run under WINE or WINEX, and many games that are written specifically for Linux. Having said that, more games are currently being written for Windows alone. If you must play something on Windows, dual-boot. |

I'm already seriously considering installing Linux but sadly the computer I use isn't mine to do that to.
Windows is driving me up the wall already with it's constant freezing right when I'm doing something crucial, so it's great that Linux can run emulation as thats the only form of games I play on the PC! ![]() |

I don't understand why so many people have trouble with Windows. I have two machines. Both are running W98se. One is my gaming rig, the other is the internet machine. They never lock up. The only time they get shut down is when a storm is coming and they only get rebooted when I do driver changes or install/uninstall software.
If Windows is so shitty, I should be painfully aware of it. Im' not, therefor Bill Gates is GOD. |

An actual data point: I run XP and Linux simultaneously. To avoid having XP screw with my Linux, I placed Linux on a separate physical hard disk and use the NT bootloader to boot it. I could use grub, but my setup works fine. You will need bootpart to do this. It is by far the path of least resistance for someone who wishes to experiment with Linux. As for putting both OSes on a single hard drive... well, that's why I have two hard disks.

Couldn't play that Panzer Dragoon game or whatever it was called either - it makes my thumbs ache. |
