Hey, we also have Molly Ivins and Jim Hightower. We aren't completely right wing. Just mostly. |

What else happened forty years ago? Maybe it was the Vietnam War that started the ball rolling on violent crime, STDs and teen pregnancy. Maybe it was the creation of NASA. Maybe it was when a Catholic first got into the White House. Maybe it was the civil rights movement. Or maybe it's so damn complicated that it's stupide to point to one thing and think it makes or breaks the morality of a nation. Jamie |

The moderates better wake up, or the Religious Right is going to destroy the Texas Republican Party.
That's a bad thing? |

Also interesting, is the fact that, as usual, the highest teen prengancy rates are in the Bible belt, while the lowest teen pregnancy rates are in places like the Northeast and Northwest associated with irreligious ways. Hereis a BBC report about crime reaching the lowest point since record keeping began in 1973 in the late 1990s. A Center for Diease Control report, here states that: Ghonorhea declined 72% from 1975 to 1997, that Chlamydia rates are down 62% in the period 1988 to 1999, and that the Syphilis prevalance rate in 1999 was was the lowest it had been since reporting begain in 1941. Here is what I don't understand about these people. They scream like Banshees every time a liberal is elected to office, but they practically invite political defeat with their meathead planks. Are they really so obtuse that they don't realize that theirs is a minority position held in contempt by most people, or don't they give a shit?

Divorce rates, by the way, have been declining steadily since 1979, nationally, and over a similar time period in Texas.
http://www.tdh.state.tx.us/bvs/reports/divorce/divorce.htm http://calvarychapel.com/library/Reference/Social/DivorceStatistics.htm Incidentally, Canada, like the U.S., saw a dramatic rise in its divorce rate from the levels found in the 1960s, followed by a significant fall in divorce rates in the 1990s, despite the fact that Canada continued its policy of educating many students in sectarian schools paid for with public funds. Canada also has far fewere conservative Christians than the United States does. http://www.vifamily.ca/cft/divorce/divorce.htm [ June 12, 2002: Message edited by: ohwilleke ] [ June 12, 2002: Message edited by: ohwilleke ]
|

And of course the highest divorce rate is among evangelical protestants. It's comparatively low among the less to nonreligious... {edited by Toto to fix /qb tag} [ June 12, 2002: Message edited by: Toto ]
|
