So, right now I've consumed about five rum and cokes and I am feeling pretty good. I have a little Jimmy kick'in on the stereo and am feeling twice as good in fact. As I write this, I am listening to "Red House" by Jimi Hendrix and fuck... this guy was just bad as can be. Some of the riffs just give me goosebumps all over and make me say, "fuck yea."

I am a music lover, and believe that it is a form of communication that in certain ways, surpasses that of speech. I believe that it taps into certain primal tendencies that most of us have. I can't get enough of it.

Here are a few more bands that do this to me. That is, make me get up and want to dance my ass off even when I am dead tired.

The Grateful Dead

Widespread Panic

The Allman Brothers Band

Beethoven

Tool

Well, some of these don't make me want to dance per say, but they do strike some kind of chord that hits the nerve, that says to me, "now is the time to say, 'fuck yea'!!!

What bands do this for you all?

Wedding Nails by Porcupine Tree on their In Abstenia album has got to be one of the best instrumentals ever.

I'm going to limit these to some of the guitar solos that give me goosebumps...

Dire Straits - Tunnel of Love (Mark Knopfler) - I once had a relationship with a girl who was unmoved by this piece of music. I should have drawn my conclusions about our compatability when she told me this.

Savatage - Summer's Rain (Criss Oliva) - Wow, beautiful... no more words.

Exodus - Changing of the Guard (Gary Holt with Rick Hunnolt) - I guess out of all the amazing shit Gary "Cat Strangler" Holt recorded with Exodus, this stands out due to speed, trickiness, melody, whammy-bar use - all the stuff he's known for. However, ending it off with a twin lead to show all those Euro-metal bands of the time (1991) how it should be done... that was just masterful.

Ozzy - No More Tears (Zakk Wylde) - the first guitar solo that ever really moved me. Still does. The accelleration in the middle is awesome.

Pride and Glory - Troubled Wine (Zakk Wylde) - I'm a big Zakk fan! He plays some great stuff throughout this album, but this one really shines through. The slide solo is just so damn dirty!

And now for something completely different...

This post would not be complete without mentioning Tori Amos, the first artist to ever record a song that made me cry (and not in a bad way, just sheer emotional overload). It's "Winter", off the "Little Earthquakes" album, if you're interested.

Just yesterday, I got the shivers while listening to "Only a Lad" by Oingo Boingo -- from their 1995 Farewell album. It was the final song of their final concert, so it has extra significance.

If you can call Oingo Boingo significant, anyway.
