I actually don't see much theological problem with Jerry Falwell's "veil of protection" remark about September 11. (Not that I believe it; I think it took Yahweh and Jupiter by surprise just as much as the rest of us.) It was insensitive, but that doesn't make it false. And I would think he blamed the wrong groups for it, but what do I know?
But I ask for a little consistency. Why didn't we hear about the veil of protection back when it was up? Why aren't any more current events explained by the presence or absence of a veil of protection? Since there have been no further major attacks, does that mean the veil of protection is back up once more? And what if there is another major attack? To be consistent, Falwell should blame this attack on another lowering of the veil. But I don't think he will, do you? And what about the last time something comparable happened to America--Pearl Harbor? Had there been some especially bad sinse committed in 1941? Or maybe God just hadn't gotten around to setting up the veil of protection. Of course, the real answer to this is most likely that Falwell made the whole thing up. I think Yahweh had more tact than Falwell, and didn't cause him to come up with the idea. |
