Islamic Fundamentalists come from the Arab world. They are supported by Arab governments and Arab populations. They are closely intertwined.
This makes about as much sense as saying the mafia comes from Italy, so if we invade Italy we'll get rid of organized crime.

They are indeed supported by arab governments and populations, but of those two sources, 'populations' is several orders of magnitude more important than 'governments'. The more arab governments we knock off, the more scared and desperate and pissed off the population gets.

So, knock off an arab government, you see a small decrease in terrorist abilities from that, but a LARGE increase in terrorist abilities from the 'population' side of the ledger.

The only way we would have a hope of controlling terrorism by knocking off governments is if we knocked off ALL the governments, and essentially ruled the entire mid-east with an iron fist. That MIGHT control international terrorism. Terrorist attacks against our occupying forces would go on for as long as we were there, however. A slow but steady trickle of american lives, in other words.

Its vitally impportant that the United States and Britain do a good job of post war reconstruction in Afghanistan and Iraq. Hopefully that can stop an adverse reaction which would 'recruit more to Al-Qaieda than anything Bin Laden could have dreamt of'.
That means giving contracts to firms which know how to reconstruct third world countries. It does not necessarily mean giving contracts to firms which helped finance President Bush's election.
United States citizens, United States tax payers, watch what happens.
