I think sci-girl was being sarcastic, one would be cheating themselves and spreading falsehoods unjustly by not at least trying to find spiritual enlightenment by reading the whole bible and following the gospels directions for salvation.

And as any logical, open minded person knows, this would take longer than half a minute.

How long did it take for you to dismiss the Norse gods?

Once I got old enough to really question and think about the subject of supernatural gods, I dismissed all gods equally and at the same time. I was also just starting to discover science which showed me that reality and the Christian bible are contradictory. I'll admit that in my case it did take a bit more than half a minute, but I was young and hadn't come into my full reasoning abilities.

So, despite a statement in the original post, no, I didn't become an atheist because I rejected a lifestyle. I rejected a belief in the supernatural. My lifestyle is quite tame, except perhaps for my collection of horror DVDs

Why, no, not at all. All you have to do is read the first page of the bible, and it becomes immediately apparent that it is a bogus pile of crap, and you're done. You can then spend the many hours you've saved by not reading biblical garbage in reading good books with some substance to them.

And, unfortunately, most of us here on iidb have been raised in a culture heavily tainted with christianity, and have therefore read considerably more than just the first page. The rot runs deep. There is no enlightenment to be found there.

If your distrust in people is that bad that you think they are deceiving you because what they are telling you contradicts your beliefs, you're being paranoid. Not wise.
