Default Lawsuit filed to close gay high school

Quote:
A New York state senator and a conservative legal group have filed a lawsuit charging that a public high school for gay, bisexual and transgender students violates laws against segregation.
CNN.com

This could prove to be every bit as amusing as Roy Moore's tantrums. I wonder who they think is the victim of segregation here, gay students, or straight students? Are they really going to fight to integrate gays and lesbians?

The Liberty Counsel is a typical religious nuthouse:
"Liberty Counsel is a nonprofit civil liberties education and legal defense organization dedicated to preserve religious freedom. "

Interestingly, they have nothing about this lawsuit on their website.

I think they will likely recieve broad public support for this giving them mainsteam credibility. Not because the majority of people are opposed to gays but because of the money involved with setting up this school. It should be interesting to watch.

Last I heard, the majority of the money used to open the school came from a private group, not the taxpayers. And yes, they hate it because they are homophobes in spirit if not in words. It is very obvious that gays in schools are still very much the targets of viscious assaults and still "enjoy" the highest suicide rate in the country.

I do not support the antigay agenda, but I think this school is just a very dumb idea, and yes it can be labeled as segregation.

Better to fight prejudice and attacks (verbal and physical) in regular schools.

The school is not closed to anyone, it only provides an environment where homobigotry (amoung other prejudices) is not tolerated.

I'm 'straight' but I never fit in as a teenager. I would have loved to attend a school like this.

I agree. I didn't have an easy time of it in high school, but it's training for the 'real world'. If you don't get it, you will be at a disadvantage. High school is rough, uncaring, and often cruel. So is life. Get used to it.

I'm not saying that crass bigotry and bullying should be tolerated in high school. Far from it. But isolation and segragation from the general population isn't a good solution, not unless you intend to keep it up the rest of your life.

Ummm ... that's the problem. They don't get used to it. Many chose suicide. And as rough as some of us have had it, I sincerely doubt it measures up to the shit homosexuals 'live' through on a daily basis.

The irony of this lawsuit is that because of conservative and fundy political power, sexual orientation is not a protetected class federally. In other words, there is no federal protection against sexual orientation segregation. Of course there are also certain facts about the source of funding for this magnet school and the nature of its enrollment criteria, that I believe that the lawsuit has missed.

True, but are 14-15 year olds emotionally and psychologically mature enough to handle it? Some are, some aren't.

When I look back at high school, and the hellish lives that some "nerds" had to live, I'm forced to question whether or not that experience was good for them...especially considering they'll never face that level of cruelty in the "grown up" world.
