Well America was taken over (some call it "colonized") in part by religious zealots. Perhaps that's why Europe has a dearth now.

Hmmmm.

We need to start persecuting, the zealots go away if they can find a weaker people to overthrow...

Maybe we can make the moon look desireable?

Just to cheer up you beleaguered American atheists, have a look at this excellent interview with James D. Watson in Scientific American.
Quote:
JW:It was that idea that there was a molecule in there which carried the information...

SA: So would you say that your work was driven more by fascination with that idea than by ambition?

JW: I was born curious. I would rather read economic history than history, for example, because I liked explanations. And so if you wanted an explanation for life, it had to be about the molecular basis for life. I never thought there was a spiritual basis for life; I was very lucky to be brought up by a father who had no religious beliefs. I didn't have that hang-up. My mother was nominally a Catholic, but that's as far as it went.
I wouldn't find this at all extraordinary if it were a European being interviewed by a European magazine, but this is in an American mag! The implied message is that religion rots your brain, or at least seriously distorts your thinking.

From the same guy who claims he is daily "assaulted" by crucifixes.

I think it has to do with the way Christians have demonized atheists. They are more despicable than the victims of cults and false religions who are seen as "deceived". Atheists are stereotyped as immoral, foxhole-avoiding, non-patriotic God-haters.

Weathers disagrees apparently, after reading e-mails from Christians, kindly in nature in spite of his op-ed generalizations about Bush and Sin Laden. He just discovered all Christians are not alike, unlike yourself.

Rad, could you please clarify. Are you saying all atheists are alike, or are you solely addressing Mike?

Also dou you think that Christians(or people in general) are less likely to have a problem with a male atheist than with a 'traditional' woman?

Thanks.

I couldn't make it any clearer I don't think. First I point out that Weathers disagrees with Mike. Then I say "unlike yourself."

Your post mystifies me I'm afraid. Taking a guess at what you ask in the second part, I take each person on an individual basis, and have equal respect for Carrie and Bill Sneddin. It neve occurred to me that Carrie was violating some "traditional woman" tenet. I don't think that way.

My mother used to talk to us like that. Whenever you ask her an honest question asking for clarification, she'd say,

"It should be obvious to the Most Casual Observer what I'm saying"

Translation: "you are a fucking idiot. You do not even deserve to speak, you are so fucking stupid."

I have always thought that was the meanest, most vicious reply to an honest query that could possibly be made. It gives a very strong message. Makes people reluctant to discuss anything with one. It's quite a barrier to discussion, don't you think?

Not sure what your point is, Rad.

I'm sorry if you think I'm an idiot, or I assume you do from your answer. You said "He discovered all Christians are not alike, unlike yourself." Unlike yourself, who? I was wondering if you were lumping all atheists together or if I read this wrong.

The second part of my post was a sincere question because I am trying to understand. I was trying to show respect for your thoughts and ask a direct question, but oh well.

The question I was asking was simply this: do you think that society has a harder time with a traditional type woman, i.e. housewife, mother, school volunteer, etc., being an atheist than it does with a rough and gruff guy? But you don't have to answer that anymore. Thanks.

Weathers didn't think all christians were alike in the first place. He didn't "just discover" anything. Radorth's statement is a misinterpretation of the evidence.

Weathers is the author of a column about how religion is bad. There's a post in SL&S about it.

Misinterpreting evidence certainly seems to be a common factor in Rads rants.

I'm left to assume that misinterpretation is also responsible for his respect of Bill and Carrie.
I'm NOT saying Bill and Carrie do not deserve respect as they are both very respectable people, but I have NO idea why Radorth has singled them out and put them up on a pedestal.

Maybe everybody knows the answer to this mystery but me since I seem to be the only person here who's ever asked Radorth about this? I don't know.

Maybe somebody could fill me in. I've tried asking Radorth directly but got nothing.
