Default How do you feel about being an American today?

Here is my first attempt at an unscientific poll. How do you feel about being American today?

I voted Ashamed to be an American. Not so much cuz I don't like the country. I love the country. I just think most of the people in it, particularly our political leaders are hopeless.

Cool WTF

I feel LUCKY to be born a citizen of the U.S. I'm perfectly happy to live here. I didn't vote for Bush. In fact, I've never voted for a Republican for any public office and doubt I ever will.

I am a white male heterosexual. Should I be ashamed to be one if, e.g., most rapists or serial killers are white male heterosexuals?

Well, I'm not saying that anyone should be ashamed, I really am curious about how this forum breaks out.

However the difference is that although you are a white male, you are not (presumably) by your actions supporting rapists. Our actions are supporting the war (taxes are due April 15th -- friendly reminder) so you can't be entirely disassociated from it.

If it doesn't matter to you what is being done in your name, you could choose the "ho hum" option.

Yeah, but the collection is being done at gunpoint. I don't recall being offered the option of not paying for the war, or for anything else. It's pay or go to jail.

Besides, some of my taxes also go to social programs which I do support.

Angry

I voted "ashamed to be an American", but that isn't really how I feel. I'm fucking pissed off at what the US ruling establishment is doing - in our name. I just hope the rest of the world directs their ire at our masters in Washington, rather than at the American people (who are endlessly harassed by propaganda).

I voted ashamed.

Actually, scared and outraged might also be true.

Just think: since 9/11 George W. Bush, almost singlehandedly (or with his single brain cell), has changed what was almost worldwide sympathy and support for the US into (highly justified) distrust, dislike, fear, anger, detestation and rejection of the US.

Think of it!

All that goodwill turned to bitterness.

And all because he wants to be Emperor of the World and take over Iraqi oil.

Amen brother!

I can't go so far as to say I'm "ashamed"; I'm angry at how Bush is disgracing us on the world stage and I'm horribly disappointed in the decision to go to war. At the same time, I didn't choose to be an American, I just am one, and I don't see how I can be ashamed over something I have no control over. (In the same vein, I can't say I'm proud to be an American -- I just happened to be born in a particular geographic region on the planet, how can I be proud of that?)

I voted "ashamed".

I saw a poll this morning that something like 75% of the country supports this war. It's just sickening.

I voted for pretty good. Regardless of who our leaders are, or what problems we might be dealing with, there is no country on this planet that I would rather be a citizen of.
