Even if the suggested self-mutilation was intended to be figurative, there is always a danger in doing that because people (like Origen) will take it literally. Where do you draw the line between figurative and literal? If the self-mutilition is figurative, is the "hell fire" figurative as well? Personally, considering that the word translated as "hell" is "Gehenna", those verses make the most sense if interpreted completely figuratively. Even so, as figurative "moral teaching", it is still reprehensible. It inspires a sense of self-loathing, a very damaging mindset for many people. -Mike... |

But I couldn't care less whether you think it was meant to be taken literally or figuratively so I'm done. Vinnie |

Vinnie,

Anyways, my argument that Jesus (allegedly) told people to lop their hands off and rip their eyeballs out has been presented in the form of bible quotes. This proves that (according to the bible) Jesus told people to lop their hands off and rip their eyeballs out. This is irrefutable, and no amount of whining or temper tantrums from you will ever change that. Sincerely, Goliath |
