And later in life (assuming the story is true) he changed his mind on his interpretatation. Origin doesn't help Goliath's reading.

Maybe his original interpretation was right and changing his mind was the wrong thing to do.

Even if the suggested self-mutilation was intended to be figurative, there is always a danger in doing that because people (like Origen) will take it literally.

Where do you draw the line between figurative and literal? If the self-mutilition is figurative, is the "hell fire" figurative as well?

Personally, considering that the word translated as "hell" is "Gehenna", those verses make the most sense if interpreted completely figuratively.

Even so, as figurative "moral teaching", it is still reprehensible. It inspires a sense of self-loathing, a very damaging mindset for many people.

Vinnie,

I thought you were going to engage in a little exegetical analysis of the hand/eye verses.
No. I merely asserted that the bible has Jesus telling people to lop off their hands and rip out their eyeballs. I have proven this assertion.

Your non-argument dismisses itself. Do you have anything else?
Wrong. The fact that I have produced quotes attributed to Jesus saying "if thy right eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee..." and "if thy right hand offend thee, cut it off, and cast it from thee..." shows that my claim is irrefutable. You may dismiss my argument, but that only makes you wrong.

I have presented an argument. My assertion is that (according to the bible) Jesus told people to lop their hands off and rip their eyeballs out. The quotes that I provided proves that my assertion is absolutely correct.

Don't forget to not make oddball references that I have no clue about in your next reply.

"proving the inexistence of Jesus Christ"?

Can he also prove the inexistence of pink unicorns?

Of course the Bible has Jesus saying that. What was under discussion was a reasonable interpretation of it.

But I couldn't care less whether you think it was meant to be taken literally or figuratively so I'm done.

All that I did was give a quote with a straightforward, obvious interpretation.

You most certainly are, since the fact that Jesus (allegedly) told people to lop their hands off and rip their eyeballs out is irrefutable.

No, I am done edited by moderator. If you raised intelligent arguments rather than reasserting the same nonsense over and over again I would continue. But you have no valid arguments edited by moderator.

Temper, temper! Do you need a nap, Vinnie? (*yawn* I definitely could...it's past 12:30 )

Anyways, my argument that Jesus (allegedly) told people to lop their hands off and rip their eyeballs out has been presented in the form of bible quotes. This proves that (according to the bible) Jesus told people to lop their hands off and rip their eyeballs out. This is irrefutable, and no amount of whining or temper tantrums from you will ever change that.

Sincerely,

Goliath
