Phil/free!

I do like the idea about 2+2=4 may not be true in all possible worlds, as it were. I think one spinoff would follow-aliens. On the other hand, the same timeless logic (mathematics) that seems to work suprizingly well, which we use to discover things in physics, would seemingly rule out such creatures existence. Another thread I suppose.

Then your belief is not absolute. And so I agree, you should question your own belief!
How do you question something which affirms nothing? How blatantly idiotic. Atheism makes no positive assertions on the existence of supernatural beings, existence of an afterlife, existence of a soul, existence of objective morality, existence of a reason for human existence. All an atheistic statement is is a statement regarding one's lack of belief in god(s). Nothing more. No affirming assertions on reasons for existence, no affirming assertions on the absolute non-existence of god, no affirming assertions on objective/subjective morality. Neither denial or affirmation of any of these things. Just one statement: "I do not believe in any god(s)." While it may be PART of a larger belief "system" atheism in itself is not any more a belief "system" than saying that one believes in a god (non-specifically). Religions are belief systems, gods themselves are not. Atheists do not have any belief in gods, but they may have non-theistic religious beliefs. One may also believe in a god, but they do not necessarily have to follow a belief system based upon their belief in a god, only on their belief in a certain religion.

ARE YOU LISTENING?

WJ,

I'm beginning to seriously question your reading comprehension skills.

Whenever you feel confident enough to defend your [false] assertions, insert a quarter and call ME! Who else here cares to defend Free's position?

As noted, the assertions in question were not made by free12thinker! When you're ready to defend your assertion that your daily beating of your wife is the just thing to do, give me a call!

Just a reminder, annoying and tiresome as WJ's non-arguments may be, calling him an "idiot" or a "buffoon" walks the line on the forum rule about not being a jerk. Let's try to be civil, eh?

Thumbs down

Bastard
I, for one, am most certainly not sorry for calling what I see. A willful idiot. He may have a superficial grasp of what constitutes philosophy, but his reprehensible behavior in the short time on these boards warrants such name calling and so far, i have not seen anything to the contrary. The shoe is an exact match. Therefore, he should wear it.

You can express the statement in binary form aswell (10+10=100), it doesn't make the statement less true, does it?</strong>
But without the existence of humans or other intelligent beings, there would be no way to express it. As such, its ontological status would be much worse than the one of the famous rock which falls in the desert while there is no one around to hear it

In short, IMHO the existence of mathematics - or of any other formal system, like chess - depends on the existence of intelligent beings.
