I was just listening to some music not five minutes ago and heard a song that almost reduced me to tears, Labours victory song of the 97 general election "Things Can Only Get Better".
That night was the first time in my voting life I could whoop and cheer at the result. I couldn't believe it, nobody could believe they had actually won. After 18 years of the tories it was amazing to wake up the day after and remember they weren't in power anymore. The whole of Scotland was ecstatic, having always been a majority Labour voting country it was even sweeter a victory to find out the hated tories had won NOT ONE seat here. I loved watching Rifkind and his cronies depart. It was even better than the day that woman was forced out. Although I voted SNP that year like the years before, words can't describe just how happy I was. It truly was a magnificent occaison. I watched the party over at Labour HQ on TV, that song was playing repeatedly, Tony Blair and Cherie were cheered as the hope for the future. Get Britain back on it's feet, for us Scots it meant devolution. What a fargin disappointment. I really admired Tony Blair. In a lot of ways I still do but by fuck has his premiership provided some nasty surprises. As the shit hits the fan over Iraq I can't help thinking it's the end of the line for Tony. As PM's go, he isn't too bad, I like him as a person despite not knowing him. I actually felt some pride in our PM and even began to lean towards voting for him. Bugger it, why Tony??? Why listen to Bush??? Why appear to be going towards the right more and more??? Blerrgghh. ![]() |

Another nasty surprise. The government plan to make obese and smoking patients sign contracts for some treatments. What about the alcholics and drug addicts???
Even sadder now. |

This sounds a bit like my reaction to Clinton in 1992. The Democrats used "Don't Stop Thinking About Tmomorrow" as their theme. It was the first time in my adult life that we had a non Republican president, and Clinton's administration had some nasty suprises, not the least of which was that he became, in the words of Michael Moore, the best Republican president the United States has ever had.

I've never understood why Blair supported the War. Perhaps you can enlighten this American? Why would a Labor party PM, support the War? I'd expect it from say, John Major or Thatcher, but Blair? I don't get it. I also don't understand his alliance with our Far-right president. Again, Tories? They're conservative, I can understand them liking Bush, but Blair?
Seems like he pissed off a lot of his own party by doing what he did. My silly conspiracy theory is that Bush has some incrimanating Dirt on Blair and is blackmailing his cooperation. I can't understand it otherwise. Am I missing something? Enlighten this confused American. |

Hey mate I'm stumped as well, I was hoping someone could enlighten me as to the big loyalty thing with Bush that Tony has.
The tories are baying for blood over it, never mind that they were behind him all the way in the case for war. They are of course hell bent on gaining an advantage with the WMD issue. |

In essance, I would guess it boils down to progress or percieved progress. But when Blair said something like "I am 100% convinced weapons will be found" as recent as last week, I worry for him. He really seems like a very decent and fair playing kinda guy.
