Yes the church is wrong (so what else is new?)
However I advise caution when it comes to child abuse cases. Remember the McMartin fiasco and take things carefully. |

a fair punishment for the 'priestly' pedophiles would be just like what Jesus said in 18:6. [ June 07, 2002: Message edited by: Fastfalcon ]
|

Any parent that finds out their child has been molested should go to CPS or the police. Let the PROPER authorities handle it, not the church. Especially the church who has a long history of cover-ups and protecting their own. I am not just talking about recent history either.
I believe a pedophile on the average molests 250 victims? I will double check that statistic. [ June 07, 2002: Message edited by: Debbie T ]
|

There is an excellent 92 page book published online by the Freedom From Religion Foundation concerning pedophile clergy members. Sadly enough, it was published in 1988 and documents case after case of such abuse and nothing has changed. You can read it at Betrayal of Trust: Clergy Abuse of Children
Several statistics about the number of children abused by each molester are cited. On a personal note - my family has dealt with this problem in the past and have found that law enforcement is nearly as useless as the Catholic Church in many of these cases. |

Hi Joel,
The FFRF newsletter has a "Black Collar Crime" column, and I think the last issue took up about 1.5 pages in a tabloid-sized newspaper. And there are plenty of Protestant/Jewish offenders listed, not just RC. cheers, Michael |

I read in the paper that some cardinal from Honduras, who is a pope candidate, says that the US press's coverage of the sex scandal is like Nazism or Stalinism.
How do you like that line of thought from one of the church commanders? Molester-priests run wild in the US and are protected by the church. The press finds out and exposes the story to the world. This is evidence of Nazism and Stalinism in the US. Manomano, just what planet does this cardinal come from and if he gets to be pope, then we can welcome back the middle ages. |

After all, isn't he really the head honcho of the Catholic church? I mean, just *where* does the buck stop in that outfit? God really must be quintessential politician: He always manages to take all the credit for the good things and avoid any blame for the bad things that happen under his watch! Maybe that's why so many sleazy politicians invoke his name so eagerly. He really *is* one of them! [ June 09, 2002: Message edited by: S2Focus ]
|

Yeah, that's a good plan. Blame God for the actions of those bearing His name. Riiiiight.
The RCC is way off base, and the Council of Bishops needs its collective butt kicked for this travesty. "Absolute power corrupts absolutely," and when any group presumes to speak for God, then does so tentatively and by majority concensus, the results are horrifying.
