Post Hello from the sprawling suburbia of Atlanta

Hello, all! Well, it's the beginning of a new year, and I thought now would be as good a time as any to set up an account and start posting on these forums. I've been lurking for quite awhile (over a year if I recollect correctly), and I've always found the conversations here to be quite engaging and often illuminating. So, into the fray I descend.

A short sketch of myself: I was born into a middle-class, Catholic family in the state of Georgia and have remained in the same area with them for the entirety of my sixteen years. Until sometime in middle school I was a good Catholic-- communion, confession, the whole shebang. I read quite a bit, and eventually (~7th grade) I came across the works of Ayn Rand, who revolutionized my worldview and drew me into the worlds of philosophy and politics. Eventually, I rejected my previous espousal of Objectivism and turned to the opposite extreme of Trotskyism, another school of thought that I would forsake after a year or two.

Currently, I consider myself both a secular humanist and a democratic socialist. I am only a high school junior, but I hope for and anticipate many intellectually stimulating and interesting discussions. I suppose this post is dragging on a bit, so I shall close here. Au revoir.

Smile Welcome to IIDB!

We have many articulate high school students here so you are in good company. I'm glad you've decided to become an active member.

Welcome Zephyrus! I too was once a Catholic and a high school junior in the Atlanta suburbs. I'm glad I managed to find an escape hatch, though I find myself missing Atlanta every once in a while. Hope you find what you're looking for in these forums.

Cool

Welcome, fellow Atlantian.

We'll try to make sure you are invited to the next Atlanta infidel get-together.

What Asha'man said! I live on the southern most edge of the vast sprawling
megalopolis myself. It's nice to have you here. It beats the hell out of driving in all that traffic, doesn't it? We might not always be illuminating but we know how to have a good time.
