Red face I have a terrible confession to make.

I usually don't watch a lot of tv - maybe an hour or two a month or something - but this last week or so, I've seen more. I've seen American Idol, The Bachelor and Joe Millionaire. Please do not think ill of me. I was unwell, and not really thinking.

America Idol wasn't too bad - for the most part the contestants sure could sing. But the songs!! God, I hated most of those fucking songs. Why do talent quests bring out so many power ballads? Simon whatsisname was the best. I liked the way he told it. Cabaret songs every bloody one of them! If I could sing like some of those contestants could, I would NOT choose "The Power of Love" or a Celine Dion song. Ick. Melodramatic pulp divas.

The Bachelor/Joe Millionaire - entertaining enough in that unimaginative romantic way. Cliche with the single red rose, and "Survivor" soundbite to signal "the choosing". LOL! Oh, god. I groaned in that sarcastic, bitchy way, as I watched the women sit there eying up the "competition" in that sarcastic, bitchy way. Ha! I think it's about time the networks got with the program - bring out "The Bachelorette", or "Jane Millionairess". I want to see the tables turned.

Anyway, that was enough TV to last me a year. Just thought I'd share. Confessions are so cleansing, aren't they.

Now, back to Parliament/Funkadelic on mah stereo.

This Idols crap clearly demonstrates the banality of popular mass culture. And the thing is; the market even controls this mass culture by selecting and continuing exactly what the mass might want. Nothing changes, no further refinement or intrinsic complexity is acquired. Musical deviations or art with a large amount of new information don't stand a chance in this highly conservative circle of self-supportive invented offers to imaginary needs. Idols will only reinforce the direction in which DJ's and record labels want to go in within the small world of popular culture.

The simplest songs will survive, and the loftier they are, the easier the mass will grasp it and buy and keep the music market and the constructed mass intact. Luckily, we can always switch off the television and listen to something worthwhile or read something which adds something to the mind.

The same can be said of the Eurovision Song Contest. Thank god its been long since I didn't have to watch this crap with my parents. Ever since I moved out I've never seen it and even before I usally had something to do on those saturdays. Hmm taTU is in the contest this year, maybe I'll watch? NAAH

Actually, you have to blame New Zealand first, they originated the whole popstar/pop idol/american idol concept

Angry Soon to bee seen on TV?

"Amercan Idiot" The unique concept where we see stupid people do ANYTHING to get famous no matter how degrading!! Watch the 19 year old uneployed trailertrash Randy Westholm as he goes to ANY length to get that tv-time. Last week Richard and Robert Weissbaum made the Columbine tragedy seem like a air-gun shooting gallery. Talk about going out in a blaze of glory! Totally Butch Cassidy and Sundance Kid!
