Maybe not sucks, but they're not the really great movies people seem to think they are. Standard sci-fi, full of cliches and hackneyed plots, dubious reasons why swordfighting is still relevant in a universe containing heavy weaponry.
The star wars expanded universe, however, is remarkably self-consistent, and full of good stories. They explain some of the complex politics that's taken for grated in the movies and tack on some better tagentially related stories to boot. The only big ciriticima I have of the expanded universe is that no one at all in it seems to have an ordinary life. Even the background street crossers have glorious or tragic histories. |

I guess I must be one of the only people that liked Attack of the Clones. I thought the Episode One was a bit childish, but I really don't mind where Lucas went with Episode 2. I think Episode 3 is setting up for something huge. But that is just me.

The only Star Wars movie I disliked was Attack of the Clones. And yes, I watched the Phantom Menace (twice).

The problem I have is that after seeing the latest installments (ep I and II), I am no longer confident that the originals were really all that good. Sure I loved them as a kid, but I wasn't exactly a connasieur at the time. I am afraid to rewatch them because it might ruin what in my mind are great flicks.

The only reason i watch Jedi is for the death star assault, it is still arguably the greatest epic space battle ever committed to celluloid (i know that the grasp of physics is dreadful). episode 2 is the same, with the CG battle at the end being one of its few redeeming features. Think of star wars without ILM's special effects. Its a horrible, horrible thought. Creating Industrial Light and Magic was one of the few well thought out things Lucas ever did.

In the 80's I thought Star Wars was the greatest. But as movie writers have matured and the quality of the storylines has improved I really find the whole story a little ridiculous. There are still some things in that universe that drive me nuts, like giant space worms that live in asteroids with what are apparently parasitic bat creatures. Just a little to fanciful for me.
That being said I know I will find myself lined up for the final installment when it comes out because even mediocre sci-fi is better than another cop/buddy flick. |
