I recall having to get my parents to sign a non-support letter to get my loans on the basis that I did. Why is thus somewhat relevant since it goes to whether you can secure their cooperation in something like a promise that they are no longer supporting you.

I used to be a financial aid administrator. The school I worked for would allow a student to be independent and get the Stafford loan on their own if their parents had not claimed them as a dependent on their taxes and had not supported them financially for the past two years. They may require a copy of your parents taxes for the last two years and/or a letter from a parent stating that they have not claimed you as a dependent or supported you financially for the past two years. Talk to a financial aid administrator at the school you are going to and see what they require for you to get a Stafford loan without your parents. Hope it works out for you.
