Bear in mind that in insects, the original mounting most likely happened to be convex. Insect eyes work by a series of little tubes -- ommatidia -- like telescopes, each with its own lens, pointed out at angles from the curve, forming a ‘compound eye’. They are inside out compared to ours. It’s another way of doing the same thing.
