Cool - I hope everything goes ok! I"m learning about all the scary stuff that happens in utero, and it makes me worry about having children!

yguy: Which do you think would be a more likely chance occurrence: the spontaneous construction from raw materials of a single celled organism, or a multicelled organism? I mean hell, dude - I was trying to make it easy on ya.
Nah, what is easy is to use your Boogeyman to explain what we can observe. To my knowledge, we do not witness the construction of an amoeba de novo from raw materials (from other amoebae, yes). On the other hand, we do witness the birth of horses from fertilized horse eggs. So, no, it is not "easier" on the point that I am trying to make. But, you can continue to obfuscate this relatively simple demonstration.

Here. Let's give a generous estimate of 1e15 (i.e. a quadrillion) cells to an adult horse. Each of these cells presumably has a crucial function, depending of their location in the horse. What are the odds that a zygote can develop into a multicellular organism that is the horse?

You give yourself too much credit to think that you can effectively communicate your point.

yguy - what do you know about bacterial biofilms?

That might help you answer your own questions about multicellular organisms arising from unicellular ones - you'd be wise to study them.

Then where did the first single-celled organism come from?

If you insist on worshipping at the altar of the God of Chance, leave me out of it. Your question is utterly meaningless. If the odds of a zygote developing into a horse were anything like as astronomical as you are implying they are, horses wouldn't exist.

I'm always open to that possibility...but you are making it rather easy for me to give myself the benefit of the doubt.

Nothing.

When have I asked about multicellular organisms arising from unicellular ones? I'm asking how the first cell came to be, and what probability has to do with it.

Well the IPU of course - what did you think we were all heathens here or something?

I'd be interested as to your opinion on the theory that bacterial biofilms represent a reasonable hypothesis as to how multicellular organisms arose from unicellular organisms.

What does this have to do with the discussion? Do you know where the first single-celled organism came from?

Now this is interesting. First of all, nowhere did I indicate that I worshipped anything, but it is yguy who launches the first attack on me. Perhaps I shall return the favor, and point to his inept God who couldn't even design things well enough by human standards?

In any case, it is the last bolded statement that raises an eyebrow. "If the odds ... are as astronomical as you are implying... horses wouldn't exist." By this logic, I can claim that "If the odds [of macroevolution occuring] ... are as astronomical as Creationists claim... no modern living organisms would exist."

Perhaps this is not your point, yguy? Maybe you need to give youself the benefit of the doubt about your communication skills, and try again?

Of course not. That's why I asked if anyone had done the experiment I suggested.

Sure you did. You just don't know it.

I'm sure He is positively crestfallen.

Of course not. Like I said, I don't worship your god.

Please - take your debate to the other thread, yguy and principia - Eric H is asking great questions and this thread does not deserve to become a sniping contest! Thanks so much. . . .
