This is exactly what I have been asking help in setting up. We need such things in place before disasters.
From what I witnessed in the shelters here, the Red Cross is being forced to work with faith based charities and FEMA, causing confusion. The mid and long term needs need to be addressed now that most people have been safely evacuated. The current shelter situation cannot last for months and months. I have emailed Mel Lipman and asked him to research some of the other secular orgs that will be working on the mid and long term housing and relocations issues. |

The criticisms of atheism often run to morality and charity. While rebutting morality is easy (divorce is way higher in the bible belt), rebutting charity is harder because our donations to the Red Cross and Medecines Sans Frontieres and all the other charities are not recorded as being donations from atheists. And our numbers aren't enough to build hospitals in the US. So we really do need more than just secular charities, we need specific freethinker/skeptic charities. |
